The Sacred Word has been re-presented in English in a fascinating but dizzying array of translations, versions, and editions. One of the great joys and privileges of my life has been to encounter the Word in the Biblical text: reading it; contemplating it; studying it; proclaiming it. I am indebted to the scholars who have produced the English Bible, and the supporting works that assist in understanding it. In appreciation, I attempt to summarize here the variety of this work, in the hope that such a digest might prove useful to others.
To date, I have prepared the following information:
- A guide to current Catholic Bible translations
- A guide to the major current non-Catholic translations
- A guide to Study Bibles for Catholics
- A guide to finding & choosing a NABRE Bible
- A digest of Bible Study helps in English of use to non-experts
- A modest history of Catholic editions of the Bible in English
Articles in-progress include:
- Which version? A consideration of criteria to employ in selecting a Bible for some purpose
- A stylistic comparison of various versions
- A digest of the overall history of Bible translation into its many English versions
- Why so many versions? A consideration of the causes that have driven the proliferation of versions
- A bibliography of works treating these and similar questions more comprehensively and/or professionally
